This past weekend, my Mom turned 70—the perfect excuse for a gathering of family and old friends at her house on the shore in Gloucester, Massachusetts. About 40 people turned out for brunch at noon with tunes from the 50s and 60s, my mom’s favorites.

We kept it pretty casual with some fun touches here and there. Our brunch cocktails included spiked lavender-scented lemonade (recipe coming soon) and grapefruit beachcombers. Our caterer, Brian Rice of Scroo Cookin, did a terrific job with mini quiches, mini lobster sandwiches, a roasted potato salad, and made-to-order eggs benedicts, among other goodies. A local baker made the carrot and chocolate cupcakes. Plus we had yard games like corn hole and bocce to keep the kids (and some of us grown-ups…) busy.

I didn’t have a lot of time to take pictures, but here are just a few fun snaps:

Can’t argue with fruit salad for brunch.

The florist, Audrey’s Flower Shop, did a great job with in-season blooms.

An eclectic bunch of cocktails but they went fast!

50s costumes were optional. I love this picture of our friend Amanda with my niece Inge, who was SO excited about her pretty dress with the flower.

This is the view from the patio. Not too shabby! And we had perfect weather.
